Baseball rivalries really don't get much better than this.

For the fifth consecutive season, the Andre Chiefs are squaring off with the Lexington Blue Sox in a battle for ICL [Intercity League Championship] supremacy at Morelli Field Aug. xviii-23.

Both teams have had an equal amount of success against each other over the years, splitting the past iv finals evenly 2-2.

This yr'due south rubber lucifer could feasibly be for all the marbles in another battle for the ages.

"These are the ii heavyweight champions of the Intetcity League," said Lexington Director Rick DeAngelis. "This is like Ali and Frazer. This is the fifth time we've faced them in the last 7 years. You're in for another smashing series."

According to Andre Chiefs Manager Chuck Andre anything can happen whenever these two stories franchises faceoff.

"This is really a all-time of 25-game series," said Andre, noting how the last four all-time-of-five game series have all gone the distance. "We've won 10 (games) each over the final four years. We've won 2 championships, and they've won two championships. And we each won 10 games going into (this serial)."

And if Game 1 was any indication, these two foes could be in store for another classic showdown.

Bluish Sox take opener

Lexington laid down the Police Tuesday night.

Blue Sox reliever Chris Police force extinguished a seventh inning rally, as Lexington took down Andre's Chiefs in the opening circular of the Intercity League finals, four-2 at Morelli Field.

Lexington jumped out to a ii-0 lead courtesy of an RBI double by Alex Voltik in the bottom of the second, giving them all the momentum.

"We got off to a good offset," DeAngelis said.

Medford resident and Andre Chiefs cleanup hitter Johnny Welch collection in Saugus native Tony Serino in the top of the tertiary, cut the deficit to 2-i.

Serino'due south Saugus neighbor Nick Martinho plays for the Blueish Sox.

Lexington added to its atomic number 82 plating two more than in the bottom of the frame via an RBI single by Dan Graham and a sacrifice fly by Steve Garth, putting the Sox ahead to stay.

Lexington'due south bullpen came up huge halfway through the contest. Following a bases loaded walk to Welch, Lexington called on reliever Jeff Blout. The Duxbury hurler didn't disappoint, fanning Mike Gedman earlier forcing Pete Copa to groundout to end the threat.

"They got some central hits, and we didn't," Andre said. "Nosotros came dorsum and battled, merely we couldn't stick that fundamental hitting all night long, and nosotros had some keen opportunities."

The Chiefs still managed to give DeAnglis a few more gray hairs in the final inning, as they attempted to stage nevertheless another rally in the seventh. Welch represented the potential tying run at the plate. The Chiefs cleanup hitter drilled Law'south offering to deep centerfield, but Mike Hart hauled the drive in at the alert track. Crisis averted.

"Nobody likes to face up Johnny Welch," DeAnglis said. "He's probably the most feared hitter in the Intercity League. He comes up with Juan Portes on base and he tin necktie the game in an instant. Nosotros were fortunate to get a pretty practiced pitch on him and he didn't go m on us. We had good pitching, and the pitching was the departure."

The win as well gives Lexington the slight edge in the best-of-five series.

"We've to get a W," Andre said. "We've to get the next one."

Keeping their Wits

For Melrose native and Andre Chiefs shortstop Nate Witkowski, this serial hits specially close to abode.

"Information technology's always good to play Lexington," said Witkowski, a Malden Cosmic and Bentley graduate. "They're e'er the team that everyone wants to beat. They're so well rounded and each year they seem to get fifty-fifty meliorate than the previous yr. They've the hit and the pitching. They're simply plain skillful."

But with a handful of local players on the Chiefs roster, including Melrose neighbour Mike Barbati, Medford natives Mike Andre, Mike Burgoyone, Paul Yanakopulos, Danny DiMare and Malden's own Jared Freni, the infielder still likes his team's chances, especially playing in his hometown.

"We love playing at Morelli," Witkowski said. "We won the championship at Morelli last twelvemonth so we know that field pretty well. A lot of us are also from the expanse, then information technology's almost similar a home game for us and we've got a lot of fans there for us.

"We hope to win (the next game) and finish the series strong."
