Disney Infinity 2.0 Tron Characters Release Date
There aren't very many games that my kids and I can enjoy playing together, however the Disney Infinity franchise has been a lot of fun. Whether we're playing through a playset or building our own adventure in the toybox, we're able to find something for everyone to enjoy.
As Infinity has become a source for indoor family fun, it shouldn't be a surprise that I was following the developments surrounding the release of 2.0 pretty closely. And I was thrilled when it was revealed that this installment of the game would feature a number of enhancements, including the ability to incorporate downloadable content (DLC) into the game. John Vignoochi said "If we get an itch or a strong request from fans that we potentially didn't foresee including in the platform during the course of development, we will be able to make that as an additional figure and introduce that character to the game digitally. To make the physical mould, the physical game piece itself, the figure, that takes considerably longer. At minimum you're looking at eight to ten months to make one of those figures." This move by the Infinity team showed that they understood their success is directly related to the fans and their enjoyment of the game. With the announcement of DLC integration, my hope was/ is that this will become a vehicle for providing; add-on content for existing playsets, additional toys/ tools to use within the toybox, and of course to provide us with new characters before the physical figures are ready to hit the market. Using this format essentially as a "beta" testing ground for determining which digital characters should progress down the pipeline into actual figures, this could be a way to ensure the characters being released are the ones that the fans are actually wanting.
Before 2.0 was released the TRON Lightcycle was a prominent feature in the marketing of the game, which drove a lot of increased interest in our house. When the game was released, it became clear that the Lightcycle wasn't currently available and didn't appear to be an unlock-able item. Which let me to believe that this was either a power disc that had not yet been revealed or was going to be among the first items of DLC. Then we started seeing video leaks online where the Hall of Heroes "glitched" revealing the statues for Sam and Quorra, as well as the power disc slots for the Lightcycle and Lightjet. Again, I was thrilled… I couldn't wait to get my hands on this content and begin incorporating it into our family fun.
Then on February 5th, we received the official release from the Disney Infinity team that stated "Today we officially reveal the much-awaited final two characters in the Disney Infinity (2.0 Edition) line up: Tron's Sam Flynn and Quorra! They are now available as digital exclusives in the Disney Infinity: Toy Box 2.0 app. They will be available for the PC Game in March 2015. The iOS version of Disney Infinity has always attracted the largest audience, so we wanted to something really special to celebrate the new app's launch."
To say the least, I was highly disappointed in this decision making process. Just to be clear, I love that this DLC is being released as a timed exclusive for the iOS app. I think it's fun and fitting that these characters are being integrated digitally in this format, I'm disappointed because as it stands there don't seem to be any plans in incorporating this DLC into the console edition of the game. The fact that the lightcycle was being used so prominently in the marketing of 2.0 before it was released, seems to be a bit misleading in my opinion. I understand that the iOS app has the widest potential reach of the individual platforms, however it's also one of the free to play formats for the game. For those of us that spent the money to have the opportunity to play this wonderful game on our home consoles, we're currently being denied the ability to enjoy this added content.
Apparently I'm not the only one that seems a little put off by this decision making process, it's been 7 fulls days since this announcement hit the Infinity forums and there are already 75 replies to the original topic.
